Flow Control for Best-Effort Networks: Fairness and Efficiency

چکیده

The Internet is established on the best-effort service model. The Transmission Control Protocol employed in the current Internet has both fairness and efficiency issues. Pricing scheme has been proposed to address the fairness issue and prevent aggressive users occupying excessive network resource. Random early detection (RED) for the incipient congestion in routers, together with explicit congestion notification, is able to maintaining a relative small queue size, thus improves efficiency of the network. It also solves the flow synchronization problem related to the tail-drop and other queue management mechanisms. Combination of the pricing scheme and RED is proposed in the effort to address the fairness and efficiency issues simultaneously.

A Unified Model for a Pricing Scheme in a Heterogeneous Environment of QoS-Controlled and Best Effort Connections

Starting from the mid ‘90s, a growing attention has been devoted to more and more sophisticated pricing models for telecommunication services and, in particular, it has become necessary to develop and test pricing methodologies to improve utility and fairness. A number of pricing models have been proposed and analyzed in the context of Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed networks (e.g., ATM), a...

Fairness of traffic controls for inelastic flows in the Internet

In best-effort networks, fairness has been used as a criterion to guide the design of traffic controls. The notion of fairness has evolved over time, from simple equality to a form of equality modulated by the user’s need (e.g. max-min and proportional fairness). However, fairness has always been defined on a per-user basis for a deterministic workload. In this paper, we argue that we must rede...

Tuning the weights in WFQ schedulers for the maximization of carried best effort traffic

This paper shows a configuration scheme for networks with WFQ schedulers that maximizes the amount of best effort traffic carried. We focus on those cases where traffic flows would congest critical links and lower network performance. The proposal is based on a Linear Programming formulation. The solution provides the weights that will allow us to control the best effort flows and reach the opt...

Fairness of the Tcp-based New Aimd Congestion Control Algorithm

Congestion control is one of the fundamental issues in computer networks. In transport control protocol (TCP) the performance of protocol is being measured based on fairness and efficiency. The fairness on round trip time (RTT) can be measured using the algorithm based on two flows or more than that. Congestion control is an effort to adapt the performance of a network to changes in the traffic...
